Open Letter to the Honourable Minister of Education and the Government of Ghana

I write as a concerned citizen regarding the quality and integrity of science practicals for the BECE. It has become evident that for our young learners to truly grasp scientific concepts and develop essential practical skills, every school must be equipped with a functional and well-resourced science laboratory.

At present, the BECE science practical component lacks the rigorous, hands-on approach observed in the Senior High School practicals for Chemistry, Biology, and Physics. These higher-level practical sessions not only reinforce theoretical knowledge but also cultivate critical thinking and problem-solving abilities—skills that are indispensable for success in both higher education and the modern workforce.

To bridge this gap, it is imperative that every school, regardless of location or resource level, be provided with a science laboratory. Such laboratories will:

Ensure that BECE science practicals are conducted in an environment that mirrors the standards of our Senior High Schools. Offer students the opportunity to engage in authentic experimental work, fostering a deeper understanding of scientific principles. Equip our youth with the necessary tools and skills to compete in a knowledge-driven global economy.

I respectfully urge the Ministry of Education and relevant stakeholders to prioritize the establishment and upgrading of science laboratories in all schools. This measure is critical for enhancing the quality of basic science education and for laying a solid foundation for the future of our country.

Together, let us commit to nurturing the next generation of scientists, innovators, and critical thinkers by ensuring every student in Ghana has access to a proper science laboratory for their BECE practicals.

Yours faithfully,
Frank Agyekum
