In a thrilling display of artistic excellence, the play A Virgin Once Again written and directed by Daniel Appiah-Adjei, recently captivated audiences at the Efua Sutherland Drama Studio, University of Ghana. The performance was made even more special with the attendance of Minister Abla Dzifa Gomashie, a renowned actress and patron of the arts, on Saturday, 21st of June 2025. It was the last performance of the three days thrilling performances. Indeed, Minister Abla Dzifa Gomashie’s surprise visit to the School of Performing Arts sparks excitement as Dr. Daniel Appiah-Adjei’s captivating play takes centre stage at the Efua Sutherland Drama Studio.

As I rushed to the Drama Studio to start the show, I received a call from an unexpected number. It was Minister Abla Dzifa Gomashie, and she was already parked under the big tree outside the studio. I hurried back to usher her in, apologizing for the delay. To my surprise, she had invited the Deputy Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Hon. Rita Naa Odoley Sowah, to join her for the performance of A Virgin Once Again.

Despite the show’s scheduled start time of 7:00 pm, Minister Gomashie patiently waited for me to arrive and escort her in. Her graciousness and respect for the arts were palpable as she took her seat and immersed herself in the performance.

A Minister’s Passion for the Arts

Throughout the show, Minister Gomashie’s enthusiasm and engagement were evident. She laughed, applauded, and even shed tears at poignant moments. Her presence was a testament to her dedication to promoting Ghana’s creative industry and supporting local talent.

A Valuable Connection

The Deputy Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Hon. Rita Naa Odoley Sowah, was equally impressed by the performance. The two ministers’

presence at the show highlighted the importance of inter-ministerial collaboration and the value of arts in shaping national identity. Some professors and notable figures in the Ghanaian landscape were also at the Drama Studio to witness this performance. They included, Professor Ntewusu, the Director of the Institute of African studies, Professor Kwasi Mensah Bonsu, Professor Agyemang Duah, the Executive Director of the J.A.Kuffour’s Foundation, Dr. Paul Opoku Mensah and others.

A Night of Appreciation

As the curtains closed, Minister Gomashie expressed her appreciation for the show, praising the cast and crew for their outstanding performance on phone. Her visit was a memorable night for everyone involved, and a reminder of the power of arts to bring people together.

A Night of Excitement and Inspiration: The Cast and Crew’s Reaction to Minister Gomashie’s Visit

When the cast and crew of A Virgin Once Again learned that Minister Abla Dzifa Gomashie, a renowned actress and veteran of the stage, would be attending their play, they were electrified. The news sparked a mix of emotions – excitement, nervousness, and anticipation. For some, the Minister’s presence was a huge motivator. They saw it as an opportunity to showcase their talents to a distinguished guest and a legend in the industry. The cast and crew were determined to give their best performance, fueled by the Minister’s presence. Others, however, felt a sense of intimidation. Knowing that Minister Gomashie is a seasoned actress with a deep understanding of the stage, they felt the weight of expectation. They respected her expertise and wanted to live up to her standards.

A Legendary Presence

Minister Gomashie’s presence was a reminder of the rich history and heritage of Ghana’s theatre industry. As a veteran actress, she has inspired countless artists and continues to be a role model for many. Her attendance at the play was a testament to her enduring passion for the arts. The cast and crew’s reaction to Minister Gomashie’s visit was a reflection of their dedication to their craft. Despite any initial nerves, they delivered a captivating performance that left a lasting impression on the audience.

Being a former student of the School of Performing Arts, University of Ghana, Minister Abla Dzifa Gomashie’s visit to the Efua Sutherland Drama Studio was more than just a courtesy call. It was a testimony to her unwavering commitment to the arts and her alma mater. Her presence at the performance of A Virgin Once Again demonstrated her passion for nurturing Ghana’s creative industry and promoting local talent.

A Few things deduced from her visit

Support for Creative Arts: Minister Dzifa Gomashie’s presence at the play highlights her dedication to nurturing Ghana’s creative industry, which aligns with her Ministry’s mandate to promote cultural heritage and tourism. Cultural Development: The visit emphasizes the importance of cultural development in Ghana’s national identity and economic growth, reflecting the Minister’s vision for a culturally grounded and economically viable tourism industry

As a seasoned politician and creative arts expert, Minister Gomashie has consistently championed the promotion of Ghanaian culture and tourism. Thinking aloud, I see Her vision for the sector to include

Investing in Local Talent: Developing and showcasing Ghana’s unique cultural heritage and creative industries. Preserving Heritage Sites: Protecting and promoting Ghana’s cultural assets to attract tourism and investment. Fostering International Collaboration: Building partnerships with international organizations and countries to enhance Ghana’s creative sector.

A Legendary Performance: Abla Dzifa Gomashie’s Dazzling Display of Talent

The story of Abla Dzifa Gomashie’s remarkable performance in Efua Sutherland’s play Edufa is a proof to her exceptional skill and dexterity as an artist. Directed by the late Ekow Blankson, a renowned theatre practitioner, the production was a collaborative effort that showcased the talents of the entire team of students at the School of Performing Arts. As the Production Manager and Cultural Consultant, I, Daniel Appiah-Adjei, had the privilege of working alongside Dzifa and witnessing her incredible talent firsthand.

Learning Lines in Record Time

When Cecilia Aboagye, the original lead actress, fell ill just days before the opening night, the production team faced a daunting challenge. But Dzifa, then the Stage Manager, stepped up to the plate and took on the role of Ampomah, Edufa’s wife. In an astonishing display of dedication and talent, Dzifa learned the lines and mastered the role within a mere four days.

Dzifa’s portrayal of Ampomah was met with widespread acclaim, with audiences and critics alike marvelling at her skill and artistry. Her performance was a masterclass in acting, showcasing her range, depth, and emotional intelligence. Ekow Blankson’s direction provided the perfect framework for Dzifa’s talent to shine, and her performance

remains one of the most memorable aspects of the production. Abla Dzifa Gomashie’s performance in Edufa is a shining example of her exceptional talent and dedication to her craft. Her ability to adapt, learn, and deliver under pressure is a testament to her skill and experience. As a veteran actress, she continues to inspire and awe audiences with her remarkable performances.

A Masterstroke of Leadership: Minister Abla Dzifa Gomashie’s Appointment

The President’s decision to appoint Abla Dzifa Gomashie as the Minister of Tourism, Culture, and Creative Arts is a bold and strategic move that promises to reshape the cultural landscape of Ghana. With her wealth of experience in the arts, Dzifa is poised to bring a fresh perspective and innovative approach to the ministry. Her appointment as Minister is a testament to her dedication and expertise, and we can expect her to be a strong advocate for the arts and creative industries.

Under Dzifa’s leadership, the Ministry of Tourism, Culture, and Creative Arts is likely to experience a new era of creativity and innovation. Her experience in managing productions and collaborating with artists will serve her well in fostering partnerships and promoting Ghana’s cultural heritage.

A Vote of Confidence

The President’s decision to appoint Dzifa as Minister is a vote of confidence in her abilities and a recognition of her potential to make a positive impact on the sector. We look forward to seeing her vision for the ministry take shape and her contributions to Ghana’s cultural development.

On my part, Hon. Abla Dzifa Gomashie is an exceptional Character with the academic and industry know-how.
