The Electoral Commission’s decision to conduct a parliamentary rerun in 19 polling stations within the Ablekuma North Constituency has sparked widespread discussions among the public, particularly among constituents, who, more than seven months after the December 7, 2024, elections, are still without a representative in Parliament.
A visit by GhanaWeb to Odorkor and its surrounding areas in the constituency on July 3, 2025, following the Electoral Commission’s announcement, revealed several issues, notable among them is how deeply some constituents have been yearning for a resolution to the ongoing impasse over the rightful winner.
One of the residents who spoke welcomed the Electoral Commission’s decision, describing it as ‘necessary.’
According to him, the delay stems from both parties’ disagreements over the collation and declaration of results.
He added that the rerun will finally put all issues to rest.
“I think it’s necessary because both of them (NPP and NDC) have not agreed to the verdict that came earlier when the returning officer declared Ewurabena Aubynn the winner. Her opponent does not accept it and so the EC’s decision is good,” he told GhanaWeb.
He also appealed for security support from law enforcement agencies, believing it would help ensure a smooth and peaceful electoral process.
“We need security because both parties may disagree,” he added.
Another person appealed for peace, adding that the rerun would help resolve the ongoing impasse.
“I agree with the EC because it will let peace prevail. The rerun will let all disputed parties accept their results,” he expressed.
Conversely, another individual also expressed the view that the rerun is unnecessary, citing the Electoral Commission’s earlier declaration of Nana Akua Afriyie, the NPP parliamentary candidate, as the winner.
He questioned the commission’s motive behind reversing its position and ordering a rerun.
“In my opinion, I don’t see the need for us to vote in the rerun because they declared Nana Akua Afriyie as the winner. So, why will they want to have a rerun in some polling stations which are disputed,” he also shared his view.
The polls are scheduled to take place on Friday, July 11, 2025, in 19 polling stations within the Ablekuma North Constituency.
According to the Electoral Commission, the rerun has become necessary because the pink sheets from these stations — though approved by party agents — were not verified by the presiding officers responsible for those polling centers.
