Ewurabena Aubynn of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has officially been sworn in as the Member of Parliament for Ablekuma North, following her narrow victory in a contentious parliamentary rerun.
The swearing-in ceremony, conducted by Speaker of Parliament Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, went ahead despite a walkout by the Minority New Patriotic Party (NPP) MPs.
The NPP Minority staged a dramatic boycott of the proceedings, citing unresolved concerns over alleged irregularities during the July rerun. They accused the Electoral Commission of presiding over a flawed process that, in their view, compromised the integrity of the election. Their protest left the chamber with only Majority members and invited guests witnessing the swearing-in.
Ewurabena Aubynn’s inauguration cements the NDC’s commanding two-thirds majority in Parliament. Her victory in the rerun—held across 19 polling stations following the nullification of the December 2024 results—was secured by a razor-thin margin of 209 votes. The Electoral Commission had called for the rerun after identifying anomalies, including unsigned pink sheets and procedural lapses.
In a brief address after taking the oath, Aubynn thanked her constituents for their support and pledged to serve with integrity, dedication, and fairness. “This victory belongs to the people of Ablekuma North. I will work tirelessly to earn your trust every single day in Parliament,” she said.
The NPP, meanwhile, has vowed to continue pressing for a full investigation into what it calls “glaring breaches of electoral conduct” in the rerun. Party officials have hinted at legal action and parliamentary motions to challenge the outcome.
Nonetheless, the NDC has celebrated Aubynn’s induction as a significant political milestone—one that not only strengthens its legislative agenda but also signals growing public support ahead of major national reforms.
