The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has revealed that about 10 individuals have been arrested and handed over to the police for engaging in various forms of malpractice in the ongoing Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).
Among those arrested is a supervisor who allegedly took snapshots of question papers and shared them on social media.
Another suspect, identified as a fashion designer, was caught with photocopies of solved questions on her way to an examination centre.
Speaking to Accra-based JoyNews on Thursday, June 12—the second day of the exams—WAEC’s Head of Public Affairs, John Kapi, confirmed the arrests and said the suspects will be arraigned soon.
“So far, we’ve had about 10 reported cases. One supervisor had a mobile phone and had taken a snapshot of the questions, which he posted on social media. There were six other invigilators who also had mobile phones, and on the phones were pictures of the questions,” he said.
“There was also one lady who described herself as a fashion designer. She had in her possession photocopied responses that she was going to distribute to the candidates. Then there was a student nurse and an administrator of a private school—all trying to solve the questions and send them to candidates in the exam hall,” he added.
A total of 603,328 candidates are writing this year’s BECE, which began on Wednesday, June 11, and will end on June 17.
The figure represents a 5.99 percent increase over the 2024 figure of 569,236 candidates.
Out of the total, 297,250 are males and 306,078 are females from both public and private schools across the country.
