Michael Allotey is the Accra Mayor
The Mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, has apologised to the general public for his heated altercation with an MTTD police officer, following reports from road users that the officer had been extorting money from drivers at Tudu in Accra.
According to him, he is not targeting the police as some have perceived, but is rather advocating for the right actions to be taken and for security agencies to carry out their duties responsibly.
“An incident happened yesterday between the mayor and the police. I’m not after the police but just trying to let people do the right thing.
“If anybody thinks what I did was wrong, I’m apologizing to the Ghanaians,” he told the media on July 8, 2025.
Allotey stated that, as part of his office’s initiative to clear the streets of unauthorized hawkers and parked vehicles under the ‘Move from the Streets’ program, the police are expected to ensure strict enforcement and compliance by those operating unlawfully.
He, however, bemoaned the lack of police enforcement, noting that it has allowed road users and hawkers to reoccupy the streets after being evicted, while drivers continue to park unlawfully, causing a nuisance to commuters.
“You can see today is the day two of the ‘move from the streets’ program. You can see today, I’m back here again, and it’s the same place where the incident happened. Because the police were not doing the right thing, the people are still here today and have parked their cars,” explained.
He added that the collective goal is to ensure that things are done rightly in the country, which he adds aligns with the government’s resetting agenda.
“Things must change. We are resetting Ghana and Accra.”
Allotey’s apology is on the back of a viral video of him heatedly having an exchange with a police officer on the streets of Accra.
In a video of the incident shared on the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, the Mayor is heard ordering the police officer to remove his helmet, ostensibly to reveal his identity. However, the officer refused to comply.
“If I remove it, I will be violating the rules of the Ghana Police Service. If I remove it, it constitutes improper dressing, and so I can’t,” the officer explained.
As the Mayor continued to question him, the officer attempted to respond, prompting the Mayor to shout, “Shut up! Who are you?”
The officer replied, “I am a police officer.”
The Mayor then accused, “You are collecting money from drivers.”
To this, the officer quickly responded, “Did you see me collecting money? You can’t just say I was collecting money. Whatever you want to do, go ahead and do it.”
The officer’s defiance eventually led the Mayor to walk away, telling his team, “Leave him alone, let’s go.”
