In a landmark initiative highlighting the strengthening ties between academia and national security institutions, Accra Metropolitan University (Accra Met) has awarded 50 fully-funded scholarships to personnel of the Ghana Police Service.

The scholarships, available at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, aim to foster professional development and capacity building within the service through access to higher education.

A high-level delegation from Accra Met, led by Prof. Mrs. Goski Alabi, Acting Vice Chancellor, visited the Police Headquarters to officially announce the scholarship package. The delegation included Mrs. Adjoa Agyekum and Mr. Kweku Agyekum (Patrons), Dr. Maxwell Dela Yao Gakpo (Dean and Acting Vice President), Dr. Munkaila Abdul (Director of Academics), Mr. Allantee Lawrence (Multimedia Officer), Mr. Abdul Nasr Awal (Digital Media Coordinator), and Mr. Nathaniel Quaye (Public Relations Officer).

The team was warmly received by the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, accompanied by COP Dr. Ernest Kwabena Owusu, Director-General of Services, and COP Mr. Michael Nketia Frimpong, Director-General of Finance, along with other senior officers from the Police Management Board.

In her remarks, Prof. Alabi reaffirmed the university’s commitment to national development through strategic partnerships. She explained that the scholarship program covers a broad range of disciplines tailored to meet the evolving needs and aspirations of police personnel.

As part of the university’s broader vision to promote leadership excellence, Prof. Alabi also announced the creation of a new annual distinction — “The Dr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno Leadership Award.” Named in honour of the current IGP, the award will be presented to the best graduating student in leadership at Accra Met’s annual convocation.

Expressing appreciation, IGP Yohuno described the scholarship initiative as transformative, particularly for officers serving in rural and underserved areas. He praised Accra Met for its forward-thinking approach and pledged round-the-clock police protection for the university in gratitude.

The event concluded with a ceremonial exchange of goodwill. The IGP presented a commemorative plaque to Accra Met in recognition of its impactful partnership with the Ghana Police Service.
