The Adentan Divisional Police Commander, identified only as Lumor, has been formally charged with assault following his alleged attack on GHOne Television journalist Banabene during the chaotic Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun.
The charge, confirmed by the Accra Regional Police Command, marks a significant development in the investigation into election-related violence that marred the July 11 polls.
In a statement issued by Superintendent Juliana Obeng, Head of Public Affairs for the Accra Region, the police confirmed that the officer seen in viral footage physically assaulting the journalist has been slapped with criminal charges. “The Accra Regional Police Command reiterates its commitment to ensuring that all individuals responsible for acts of violence, intimidation, or misconduct during the elections will be held accountable under the law,” the statement read.
Superintendent Obeng noted that the Command has thoroughly reviewed multiple video recordings of violent incidents that occurred at polling stations during the by-election and has identified several persons of interest.
“In relation to the violent incidents and assaults recorded during the Ablekuma North Parliamentary rerun held on Friday, July 11, 2025, the Command has reviewed several videos capturing incidents at polling stations to identify all individuals involved,” she said.
She also revealed that police investigators have taken detailed statements from complainants and witnesses to build a solid case against all those implicated. Medical report forms have been issued to victims in accordance with due process, she added.
The police say they have secured credible leads and have promised swift arrests in the coming days. “We are urging the public to cooperate with the police and share any credible information by contacting us through emergency numbers 18555 or 191,” Superintendent Obeng appealed.
The assault on the journalist has sparked outrage from media watchdogs and civil society organisations, who have called for firm action against all perpetrators of election-related violence. The charge against Commander Lumor is being seen as a critical test of the police’s willingness to hold their own accountable and restore public trust.
