Afenyo-Markin appeals to colleague MPs for logistical support

Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, Minority Leader in Parliament, has made a passionate appeal to his colleague Members of Parliament to support him with logistics and medication to contain the cholera outbreak in Winneba and its surrounding communities.

He said his recent visit to the Winneba Government Hospital where most of the affected persons were receiving treatment showed a bleak situation, with lack of Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs) for health workers.

Mr Afenyo-Markin, also the MP for Effutu Constituency in the Central Region, while making a statement on the floor of Parliament on Thursday, said although he had made a personal donation of GHc100,000 and 100 mattresses to support the fight against the epidemic in the constituency, it was woefully inadequate to remedy the situation.

The legislator said his recent visit to the Winneba Government Hospital showed cholera patients in distress condition, with no water flowing through the taps.

“The aged are the most affected in the area with children going through traumatic conditions,” Mr Afenyo-Markin stated.

The Effutu MP noted that there is likelihood of spiral effects of the communicable disease if immediate measures are not put in place to curb the spread.

Ghana is experiencing a cholera outbreak since October 11, 2024.

Ghana’s Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh told Parliament on Tuesday, February 18, 2025, that at least 719 confirmed cases of cholera with 49 deaths in Ghana, as of February 13.

Five regions have, so far, reported cholera cases including Greater Accra, Eastern, Western, Ashanti and Central.

The Central Region is the hardest hit, particularly in Agona West and Effutu constituencies.
