Government communicator Sammy Ayeh says the claim by Minority Leader and Effutu MP, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, that he was assaulted by a police officer during the #SaveTheJudiciaryDemo is false.
The demonstration, staged by the NPP and some allied parties, was held to protest the suspension of the Chief Justice and demand a halt to her removal process.
Following the protest, videos circulating online showed the MP appearing to hit a police officer.
However, Afenyo-Markin says the videos are misleading and do not reflect the true incident.
He claims it was the officer, identified as Constable Forson, who attacked him without provocation.
“As I approached the barricade, without any provocation, a uniformed police officer stationed behind the barricade — Constable Forson, a tall, fair, heavily built officer — deliberately struck the left side of my chest with the full force of his right palm, directly near my heart.
“The impact dazed me, and I was visibly shaken and short of breath. In that moment, I spontaneously protested his conduct, asking why he would seek to harm me,” the MP said in a statement on Monday, May 5.
But Dr. Ayeh insists the Minority Leader’s account is false and an attempt to shield himself from the consequences of his actions.
“What we are seeing is a Minority Leader, Honorable Alexander Afenyo-Markin, on live tape attacking a police officer whose duty is to protect them. That is very unfortunate.
“His explanation is a lie — the kind you would expect from an ordinary NPP foot soldier, not someone at the level of Honorable Afenyo-Markin. The statement has become a subject of public ridicule because we all saw the video,” he said.
