It was a weekend to remember for Ghanaian players plying their trade abroad, as several of them made significant contributions to their teams’ successes.

As the four nation tournament draws near, Ghanaian players abroad are making strong cases for inclusion in Otto Addo’s Black Stars squad.

3Sports assesses how some of the Ghanaian players fared during the weekend matches.

Ibrahim Sulemana, Atalanta

Ghanaian midfielder Ibrahim Sulemana has once again proven his worth for Atalanta, scoring a crucial goal in their thrilling 3-2 win over Genoa at the Luigi Ferraris Stadium, Genoa.

Sulemana’s impressive performance came on the back of his goal in the previous match, which secured UEFA Champions League football for the Italian outfit.

The 21-year-old’s consistency and skill on the pitch in the past few games have made him a valuable asset to the team.

Sulemana’s goal against Genoa has now seen him score in back-to-back games for Gian Piero Gasperini’s side.

Sulemana’s impressive performances for Atalanta have seen him score two goals in eight league matches this season, a significant improvement from last season when he scored two goals in 21 league matches for Cagliari.

With just one game left to conclude the current season, Sulemana will be looking to better his tally and set a new highest scoring record in the league.

Mohammed Fuseini, Union Saint-Gilloise

Ghanaian forward Mohammed Fuseini was the star of the show as Union Saint-Gilloise thrashed Royal Antwerp 4-0 in the Belgian Pro League.

The 22-year-old striker scored a stunning brace, opening the scoring in the 6th minute and doubling Union SG’s lead in the 35th minute.

With 14 goal involvements (11 goals, 3 assists) in all competitions this season, Fuseini is having a remarkable campaign.

The brace against Royal Antwerp takes Fuseini’s tally to three goals in his last two outings for Union SG.

His impressive form has cemented his place as a key player for the Belgian outfit, and he will be looking to continue his scoring run as Union SG pushes for the league title.

Jerry Afriyie, FC Lugo

Ghanaian forward Jerry Afriyie scored on his return from international duty, helping FC Lugo secure a crucial 2-0 win over Zamora at home.

Afriyie’s goal was a welcome boost for Lugo, who are fighting to avoid relegation in the Spanish third tier league.

The Ghanaian international had a disappointing experience with the U-20 national team, which failed to progress to the semifinals of the AFCON tournament after losing to host Egypt in a penalty shootout.

However, Afriyie quickly put the disappointment behind him and scored an important goal for Lugo, showcasing his impressive form and goal-scoring ability.

Afriyie’s goal takes his tally to four goals and two assists in nine games for Lugo, and he has now scored two goals and provided two assists in his last four games for both club and country.

Lawrence Agyekum, Cercle Brugge

Ghanaian midfielder Lawrence Agyekum delivered a standout performance on Sunday evening, finding the back of the net to help Cercle Brugge thrash Patro Eisden 5-1 in the first leg of the Belgian Pro League relegation playoff.

The impressive performance comes after Cercle Brugge has confirmed the permanent signing of the Ghana international from Austria giants RB Salzburg, with the 21-year-old midfielder committing to a four-year contract until 2029.

Agyekum’s impressive performances during his loan spell in the 2024/25 season, featuring in 44 matches and scoring twice with two assists, convinced the Belgian Pro League outfit to exercise their purchase option.

With a contract until 2029, Agyekum is poised to play a key role in Cercle Brugge’s future plans.

He will aim to build on his impressive numbers from last season and contribute more to the team’s success.

Edmund Baidoo, Salzburg

Edmund Baidoo climbed off the bench to score and register an assist for Salzburg in their 2-1 win over BW Linz in the Austrian Bundesliga.

The forward has 3 goals this season, and two have been match winners.

Baidoo’s goal tonight keeps Salzburg in the race for Champions League football.
