The Divisional Queenmother of Mla Hiomeh in Agomeda, located in the Shai Osudoku District of the Greater Accra Region, has made a fervent appeal to the government for immediate action on the deteriorating road network in most parts of the Shai area, particularly Agomeda and its adjoining communities.
The roads are in terrible condition, with significant damage rendering them deplorable and hazardous.
Speaking at the grand durbar of the Agomeda Homecoming Festival 2025, held at the Agomeda Palace Square, Nana Dr. Korlekwor Korli Yohi III used the occasion to highlight the urgent need for assistance, addressing her concerns directly to the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Akweley Ocloo, who was the special guest of honor.
The queenmother implored the government, through the regional minister, to prioritize the comprehensive rehabilitation or reconstruction of all affected roads in the area. She specifically drew attention to the severely deteriorated roads, which she described as a significant safety concern, urging swift action to avert potential disasters.
Identifying the key roads, she said, “Honorable Minister, my biggest request to you at this juncture is the reshaping and tarring of interconnecting roads within the Shai area — Agomeda-Kordiabe, Ayikumah-Doryumu, Dodowa-Afienya, Kordiabe-Doryumu, Ayikumah-Larteh, and Agomeda-Abonse.”
Fixing these roads, she emphasized, would significantly enhance farming, trading, and socio-economic activities within the communities.
The queenmother also called on the people to embrace peace and unity, discouraging negative attitudes, and stressing that true development could only be achieved through collective harmony.
The Agomeda Homecoming Festival
The Agomeda Homecoming Festival was celebrated with the aim of revisiting the past and reviving the cherished values of the Agomeda community, paving the way for renewed unity and a stronger commitment to development.
The festival, celebrated with grandeur, brought together sons and daughters of Agomeda, both at home and abroad, members of the Shai Traditional Council, chiefs and elders of the Mla Hiomeh Division of the Shai Traditional Area, the Shai Queens Association, and other dignitaries.
Held under the theme “Sankofa, Uniting Agomeda for Development,” the festival drew from Agomeda’s historic reputation for cleanliness, unity, and rich cultural traditions.
However, Nana Dr. Korlekwor Korli Yohi III lamented that these virtues and traditions had eroded over the past two decades due to persistent chieftaincy disputes.
The revival of the festival this year followed a special appeal from the youth of Agomeda, who, recognizing the negative impact of disunity and the prolonged absence of cultural celebrations, approached the queenmother and the elders to seek permission to organize a homecoming festival.
The event served not only as a homecoming for townspeople but also aimed at engaging the youth in productive activities, raising their sense of responsibility, and promoting discipline — all geared towards meaningful contributions to community development.
This year’s festival also focused on the growth and promotion of local businesses, providing a platform for economic empowerment by presenting Agomeda and its surrounding communities to a broader audience and mobilizing the townspeople for various community projects.
Greater Accra Regional Minister’s Remarks
Linda Akweley Ocloo, Member of Parliament (MP) for Shai-Osudoku and Greater Accra Regional Minister, acknowledged the poor state of the roads within the constituency, noting that road rehabilitation remains a priority for President John Dramani Mahama’s administration.
She assured the gathering that contracts had already been awarded for the rehabilitation of affected roads, including Agomeda-Kordiabe, Dodowa-Afienya, and Agomeda-Abonse roads, with work set to commence soon.
Touching on another pressing issue, Madam Ocloo declared the Dodowa Forest a security zone in light of severe encroachments and warned that any violation of the directive would result in the confiscation of materials.
The regional minister also reiterated the government’s commitment to resolving pending chieftaincy disputes in the district and urged the people to maintain peace in Agomeda and across Shai-Osudoku.
On his part, the Chief of Dodowa, Okukurubuor Tei Kwesi Agyemang V, expressed concern over the lack of basic amenities in Agomeda, including a public place of convenience and a proper durbar ground. He called on residents to take an active role in the development of their community, emphasizing that progress is a collective responsibility.
