Akonta Mining Company Limited has initiated legal action against the Minerals Commission and the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah, demanding GHs20 million in damages.

The lawsuit filed in the High Court of Justice centers around allegations of defamation stemming from the defendants’ publications concerning illegal mining and corruption within protected forest reserves.

Akonta Mining Company Limited is claiming general damages for defamation, as well as special or aggravated damages for libel, citing republication of the statements by both local and international media.

In addition to the financial compensation, the company is seeking a court order to compel the defendants to retract the allegedly defamatory statements and issue an unqualified public apology across various media platforms, including television, radio, Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, and X.

Furthermore, Akonta Mining is requesting a perpetual injunction to restrain the defendants from further publishing defamatory statements and an order for costs, including legal fees and all expenses incurred in pursuing the lawsuit.

The writ of summons instructs the Minerals Commission and the Lands Minister to enter an appearance within eight days of being served, or risk judgment being given in their absence.
