Legal practitioner and campaign spokesperson for Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, Kwasi Kwarteng, has alleged that former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has abandoned Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in the upcoming New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearership race.
He claimed this development has left the camp of the former Vice President and 2024 NPP flagbearer in disarray ahead of the party’s presidential primaries.
“President Akufo-Addo, who was the sailor of the ship, the captain of the ship, and the main machinery behind Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia during the last election, has now abandoned the ship. This makes the direction of the ship a bit shaky,” Kwarteng said.
Speaking on Accra-based JoyPrime on Friday, July 4, Kwarteng further alleged that key figures in Bawumia’s team, including former Food and Agriculture Minister Bryan Acheampong, who is also vying for the flagbearership, no longer believe in his presidential agenda.
“Bryan Acheampong, for instance, was very integral in Dr. Bawumia’s camp to the extent that he even wanted to be the vice-presidential candidate. He was apparently tipped as one of the few people who could be his running mate. Today, even one of his financiers doesn’t believe in his agenda,” Kwarteng added.
Kwarteng expressed confidence that Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, a former Assin Central Member of Parliament, would secure the NPP’s flagbearer slot if the party were to vote today.
“If we vote today, Ken will get the nod,” he said.
Meanwhile, a recent poll conducted by independent research firm Global InfoAnalytics has revealed that the former Vice President has an upper hand in the upcoming race.
