Allegation of fraud remains allegation, Gifty Oware-Mensah will meet NIB — Afenyo-Markin

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has confirmed that Gifty Oware-Mensah, former Deputy Executive Director of the National Service Authority (NSA), has returned to Ghana and is prepared to cooperate with the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) in its probe into allegations of at least 80,000 ghost names on the NSA’s payroll.

The Effutu MP and lawyer disclosed that Mrs. Oware-Mensah arrived in Ghana on Tuesday, March 4, 2025, and is ready to appear before the NIB alongside her legal team.

“I am aware that Gifty arrived this afternoon. I have been in touch with her; she’s here in Ghana. Her lawyers are in contact with the National Investigation Bureau, and I am sure she is going to make herself available. Whatever the state investigation authorities have, they would proceed within due process,” he stated.

Afenyo-Markin reiterated that he and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) support accountability but insist on fairness in the process.

“My view is that the NPP is not against accountability, me inclusive. We have been in public service, we are out of it, so obviously if the new government needs former officials to explain certain matters in one way or the other, it is in their right to do so,” he explained.

Addressing speculation that Oware-Mensah had left Ghana to evade scrutiny, NPP Deputy General Secretary Haruna Mohammed clarified that she had been on official duty abroad.

“I would like to state the fact that the allegation of fraud remains an allegation. This is an established fact that has been publicly said at the National Service Authority. This is an allegation which has not been proven,” he asserted.

The development follows President John Dramani Mahama’s directive during the State of the Nation Address on February 27, urging security agencies to place individuals accused of corruption-related offenses on a wanted list.

Prior to Oware-Mensah’s return, the NIB had already detained and questioned Kwaku Ohene Gyan, also known as Osonoba, a former Deputy Director of Operations at the NSA, as part of the ongoing investigations.
