A galamsey operator, who allegedly raped an elderly woman has been remanded by the Tarkwa District Magistrate Court into police custody due to ongoing Police investigations.

The accused, Vitus Nsore, 24, would appear before the court again on March 21, 2025. His plea has not been taken.

Police Sergeant Douglas Addae, who led prosecution, told the court presided over by Mr Charles Owusu Nsiah that the complainant, was a 56 year-old farmer who reside in Amoanda with her family and Nsore.

He said on February 9, this year, around 0100 hours, the complainant was asleep in her room, but because of a heavy downpour the entire community did not have electricity and was plunged into darkness.

The prosecutor said Nsore took advantage of the blackout, went into the complainant’s room quietly and violently attacked her.

He then subjected her to torture and beatings, covered her mouth with his hand and forcibly had unprotected sex with her.

According to Sergeant Addae, after Nsore had satisfied himself, he decided to kill the complainant to keep his actions hidden, locked her in the room, threatening to return with a knife.

Prosecution said the complainant, who was weak and helpless, however, managed to escape through the window and started screaming for assistance.

He said one Anthony Kwofie and the complainant’s children came to her aid and then combed round the area for the accused person, but to no avail.

He said Nsore was later arrested by the complainant’s children with the aid of some concerned citizens of Amoanda, handed him over to the Huni-Valley Police, where the complainant had reported the matter, and so he was re-arrested and detained, the prosecution said.

Sergeant Addae saidthe accused person was subsequently escorted to the Western Central Regional Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU) Office for investigation, and a medical report form was issued to the complainant to attend the hospital for treatment and report.

The prosecution said the complainant returned the form to the police endorsed by a medical officer at the Tarkwa Municipal hospital.
