The former New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate hopeful, Alfred Ababio Kumi, who petitioned President John Dramani Mahama to dissolve the committee probing petitions for the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo over an alleged secret meeting, has reportedly been arrested.

Hours before his arrest, which reportedly happened on Friday, May 23, 2025, Alfred Kumi reacted to a video shared by Godwin Edudzi Tamaklo, the acting Chief Executive Officer of the National Petroleum Authority, purportedly showing the secret meeting between the justices on the committee and a lawyer of one of the people who petitioned for Chief Justice Torkornoo’s removal, he based his petition on.

In a post shared on X, on May 22, 2025, Alfred Kumi indicated that he was under threat following the release. He hinted that he had more videos of the so-called secret meeting.

He went on to caution security officials against any attempt to arrest him because he petitioned the president on the matter and not the officials.

“I said it that if I have to run for my life, someone will release the video! There are more videos, please any state agency that does not allow the president @JDMahama to respond to the petition, but rather want to pick me up, will cause more harm to our state than picking me.

“I petitioned the president, not BNI or national security. Leave me the hell alone!!” he wrote on X.

Kumi alleged that on May 15, 2025, after the committee’s inaugural sitting, Justices Pwamang and Adibu-Asiedu, along with Supreme Court Justice Yonni Kulendi, were seen dining with Thaddeus Sory, counsel for petitioner Daniel Ofori, at Santoku Restaurant in Accra’s Airport Residential Area.

He claimed they were overheard discussing matters related to the petition.

“The meeting between Justices Pwamang, Kulendi, and Asiedu with Thaddeus Sory clearly has tainted the integrity of the process and reduces public confidence in the process,” a report by asaaseradio.com quoted Kumi’s petition.

However, the CCTV footage of the restaurant shared online, which has no sound, appears to completely contradict the claims made by the petitioner, Alfred Kumi.

Thaddeus Sory, a legal representative for one of the petitioners seeking the removal of suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, was seated at the restaurant with Kotei Dzani, a former Council of State member, talking and eating together at a table.

Sory appeared unaware of the presence of one of the judges implicated in the petition until his attention was drawn to it.

After a brief conversation, they each continued with their separate business. It appears there was no such meeting to discuss the petition.
