AngloGold Ashanti Schools have announced a temporary closure due to rising security concerns in Obuasi.

This decision follows recent violent incidents in the town, including the burning of vehicles and destruction of property, linked to clashes between small-scale miners and military personnel guarding the AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine.

These clashes have reportedly resulted in eight deaths.

In a press release dated January 19, 2025, the school management emphasized that the closure aims to ensure the safety of students, staff, parents, and other stakeholders.

The schools will remain closed on January 20 and 21, 2025, with a planned reopening on January 23, depending on the restoration of calm in the area.

“In order to safeguard lives and property and to promote the welfare of our students, staff, parents, and all stakeholders, the AngloGold Ashanti Schools will be closed on Monday, January 20, and Tuesday, January 21, 2025,” the statement read.
