Correspondence from North East Region
Tragedy has struck again at Walewale, as 45-year-old Bawa Sumaila was fatally shot by a police reinforcement team at the Mba Duraana’s Palace.
The shooting incident by the police occurred around 5:54PM at the Chief Palace (Mba Duraana’s Palace) at Walewale, where the police had come to take away the regional minister.
The incident occurred during a visit by North East Regional Minister, Tia Ibrahim, to brief the chief on the newly imposed curfew.
Upon their arrival at the chief’s palace, they began firing warning shots which were live bullets to disperse the unarmed youth attempting to question the minister about the curfew.
Alhaji Sumaila, who was standing quietly at the palace, was caught in the crossfire and sustained severe injuries. He was rushed to the Walewale Government Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
This incident is the latest in a series of violent clashes between law enforcement and civilians at Walewale.
The community is still reeling from the recent military brutality, which resulted in the death of 36-year-old Imoro Hafiz, on Saturday.
The residents of Walewale are demanding justice and an end to the violence.
