Kotoko legend Samuel Opoku Nti believes the appointment of former Dreams FC technical director Karim Zito came at just the right moment, despite mixed reactions from fans and media over the decision to part ways with Prosper Ogum with only a few games left in the season.
Ogum, who had just six matches remaining in Kotoko’s 2024/25 campaign, was dismissed following a poor run of form. His sacking surprised many pundits, who expected him to be allowed to finish the season. However, Opoku Nti insists that Kotoko’s management made the right call by acting when they did.
“I believe the timing was right. We had about six matches left before Zito arrived now it’s five and I think it was the correct decision,” Opoku told Akoma FM in an interview.
The former Kotoko CEO and player explained that, under Prosper Ogum, the team lacked cohesion and energy, making a managerial change necessary to revive the squad’s fortunes.
“The way Kotoko was playing match after match something wasn’t clicking. It’s better to sacrifice one individual than risk the entire team falling apart,” he said.
“This happens even in Europe. I knew that if they changed the coach, Kotoko could win two or three matches in a row.”
Karim Zito has already made a strong start to his tenure, leading Kotoko to a vital 1-0 victory over Aduana Stars, courtesy of Kwame Poku’s 26th-minute goal a win that has reignited Kotoko’s hopes of finishing the season on a high.
