Are those cleared unwilling to prove innocence like Gyakye Quayson? — NPP’s Nana Ekua

Nana Ekua, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 2024 campaign spokesperson on health, has raised questions about the recent withdrawal of criminal cases by the Attorney General, Dr. Dominic Ayine.

Speaking on Accra-based GHOne TV on Wednesday, February 19, she said the mass discontinuation of cases involving NDC members, contradicts the ruling party’s anti-corruption stance.

“There was a mass clearing exercise that happened, and for a political party that criticized the previous government heavily on that note, I mean, it is a little hypocritical,” she stated.

Her comments come in the wake of the Attorney General’s decision to file a series of nolle prosequi, effectively discontinuing high-profile cases involving NDC members such Bank of Ghana Governor Johnson Asiamah, Collins Dauda, Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson and others,

Nana Ekua cited a statement made by the Attorney General, Dr. Dominic Ayine, about James Gyakye Quayson, the NDC MP for Assin North, who insisted on proving his innocence in court despite the option to have his case dismissed.

“When the current Attorney General had his press conference, there was something interesting that he said. He said that in the case of Honorable Gyakye Quayson, he wants to prove his innocence. So, can we infer that the others are not interested in proving their innocence?” she asked.

She stated that the government’s move to withdraw multiple cases within a month of entering office raises questions about whether thorough investigations were carried out before the charges were dropped.

“You’ve only been in office for about a month, so can we say that you’ve had enough time to go through all the cases to be able to determine that there’s nothing there?” she questioned.
