The One Ghana Movement has called for the immediate arrest, prosecution, and severe punishment of individuals behind the violence during the partial rerun of the Ablekuma North parliamentary election.
The rerun, held across 19 polling stations, followed disputes arising from the 2024 general election. It ended with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Ewurabena Aubynn, winning with 34,090 votes and breaking the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 28-year hold on the seat.
The NPP’s Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie polled 33,881 votes.
However, the exercise was marred by violent incidents, including viral videos of NPP stalwart Hawa Koomson being assaulted and crawling on the ground.
Other footage showed police officers assaulting a journalist and thugs reportedly beating the NPP’s Deputy National Organiser.
In a statement signed by its Director, Senyo Hosi, the One Ghana Movement stressed that those captured in multiple videos and identified by the public must not be allowed to walk free.
“One Ghana Movement calls for the immediate arrest, prosecution, and severe punishment of all individuals responsible for the violent attacks during the Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun held on Friday, July 11, 2025.
“Those seen operating in groups must be prosecuted not only for threats of harm and death but also for assault, battery, destruction of property, and, most importantly, under the Vigilantism and Related Offences Act, 2019, which prescribes custodial sentences of 15 to 25 years,” it said.
The group further condemned what it described as a tit-for-tat culture among political actors, warning that such cycles of violence threaten Ghana’s democracy and reflect a growing disregard for the rule of law.
They, among other things, demanded an immediate and transparent investigation into the conduct of police officers deployed to Ablekuma North, as well as the expedited establishment and implementation of the Independent Police Complaints Commission, as announced by the Minister for the Interior, Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak.
