Asamoah Gyan proposes smart attendance plan for CAF African Schools Football Championship

Ghanaian football legend and ambassador for the 2025 CAF African Schools Football Championship, Asamoah Gyan, has put forward a thoughtful suggestion to boost attendance and overall success of the upcoming tournament.

Set to take place from April 21 to 26 at the University of Ghana Stadium in Accra, the tournament will feature talented U-15 boys and girls teams from eight African countries, all vying for continental glory.

Speaking on TV3’s New Day, Gyan expressed his enthusiasm for the initiative but raised concerns about fan turnout, especially during matches involving Ghana.

“If you have a good foundation, that’s the best,” he said. “My worry is about attendance, so anytime Ghana is playing, let’s bus all the school kids to the venue. It’s an African Cup for schools, after all.”

Gyan’s proposal aims to not only fill the stands but also inspire the next generation of footballers through direct exposure to competitive youth football at the highest level.

Launched by CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe in April 2022, the African Schools Football Championship has already impacted over 1.9 million boys and girls across 46 countries, making it one of Africa’s most successful youth sporting initiatives.

The 10,000-seater Legon Sports Stadium, newly built for the 2023 African Games, will host the matches and also provide top-tier off-pitch facilities to support capacity-building programs during the event.
