The Municipal Health Director, Delphine Gbogblovor, announced a significant milestone in maternal health during an interview at the sidelines of an annual health review meeting.
She credited this achievement to carefully implemented measures following extensive research into the causes of rising maternal deaths in previous years.
“We are happy to report that those measures we put in place are bearing fruits now. It is refreshing to note that our Municipality did not record any issues of maternal mortality, and we are all proud of that,” she stated.
Gbogblovor explained that one of the key issues identified was that many pregnant women delayed seeking antenatal care, often waiting until their sixth or seventh month of pregnancy. This delay had previously led to health complications for both mothers and babies, sometimes resulting in fatalities.
Determined to sustain this progress, she assured that the Directorate would intensify sensitization efforts to encourage early antenatal care.
Challenges in Healthcare Access
Despite this success, the municipality continues to face significant healthcare challenges. Dr. Lord Loglo, Medical Superintendent of the Asante Akim Central Municipal Hospital, highlighted the poor condition of roads leading to the facility, making access to medical care difficult, particularly in emergencies.
Additionally, he pointed out that the hospital’s faulty generator and inconsistent electricity supply have further strained healthcare delivery.
He noted that efforts to repair the generator had been unsuccessful and urged the government to intervene to ensure uninterrupted power supply for critical medical services.
