The Paramount Chief of Asante Mampong (Mamponghene), Daasebre Osei Bonsu II, is reportedly dead.

According to a report by myjoyonline.com, the Mampong Traditional Council and the Bretuo Dynasty have officially informed the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, of the death of Daasebre Osei Bonsu II, at the Manhyia Palace.

There had been unconfirmed reports of the death of the paramount chief over the past few days.

The official announcement of his death to the Asantehene is in line with Asante tradition and marks the end of an era for one of the most respected traditional leaders in the country.

Daasebre Osei Bonsu II died at the age of 86 years.

He recently made headlines when he issued an ultimatum to some members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in his traditional area to apologise for saying “no Asante will be allowed to become MCE of Mampong.”

Daasebre Osei Bonsu II, known in private life as Saint Oswald Gyimah-Kessie, was born on December 31, 1939.

He was a lawyer and an economist by profession and previously served as Registrar of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).

Until his death, he served as the Vice President of the Ashanti Regional House of Chiefs and was the esteemed occupant of the Silver Stool, a position of immense traditional significance in the Asante Kingdom.
