Ashanti Regional Minister Dr. Frank Amoakohene has issued a firm warning to individuals who dump refuse at unauthorized locations, particularly within the Central Business District (CBD) of Kumasi.
To clamp down on the practice, Dr. Amoakohene has ordered that Close Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras installed at strategic points within the CBD be redirected to monitor and capture footage of offenders.
In a media interview held during a clean-up exercise on Saturday, he made it clear that no apologies will be accepted from anyone caught engaging in illegal dumping.
“Such persons will be dealt with according to the law,”
he stated emphatically.
The clean-up was part of a two-week series of activities marking the Ashanti Festival for 2025.
“I want to send this signal out there so that at the end of the day, if someone is captured on tape or we get evidence or someone reports that an individual is dumping refuse in the drains or at unapproved places, they wouldn’t come begging or apologizing for something that they were warned about ahead of time,”
the Minister cautioned.
Dr. Amoakohene stressed that maintaining cleanliness and promoting national development is a shared responsibility.
“It’s not the effort of only central government. We need citizens to support us.”
Region-Wide Clean-Up
The clean-up exercise saw a massive turnout, not just in the CBD but across all sub-metros, districts, and municipalities in the region, following the Minister’s directive.
The initiative forms part of a broader campaign to instill a culture of cleanliness and civic responsibility among residents of the Ashanti Region.
