The Chief of Ashaiman, Nii Annang Adzor, has cautioned drivers in the municipality to exercise extreme caution on the roads as the rainy season sets in, warning that speeding on slippery surfaces could lead to fatal accidents.

He made this call during a community sensitisation and awareness programme on the effective management of flooding and accidents in Ashaiman. The event, which brought together various stakeholders, sought to educate residents on preventive measures to mitigate road accidents and environmental hazards during the rainy season.

Reckless driving

Nii Annang Adzor emphasized that reckless driving, especially during heavy rains, increases the risk of road crashes. He urged motorists to be mindful of their speed, maintain their vehicles in good condition, and be extra vigilant when driving in wet conditions.

“The rains have begun, and the roads will become slippery. Speeding on such surfaces is extremely dangerous and can lead to avoidable accidents. I urge all drivers, especially those in Ashaiman, to be cautious and drive responsibly to protect lives and property,” he said.

The chief also expressed deep concern about the indiscriminate disposal of waste, which he described as a major contributing factor to flooding and the outbreak of diseases in the community.

He admonished residents to desist from dumping refuse into gutters and other unauthorized areas, stressing that such practices block waterways, leading to severe floods that can displace families and destroy property.

Refuse

“Many of the floods we experience are man-made due to our poor waste disposal habits. Dumping refuse in drains prevents water from flowing freely, causing severe flooding. This not only destroys property but also exposes us to diseases such as cholera and malaria. We must all take responsibility and keep our environment clean,” he stated.

Nii Annang Adzor further appealed to individuals living in waterlogged areas to take necessary precautions to avoid disasters. He advised them to construct proper drainage systems, elevate their homes where necessary, and collaborate with local authorities to implement flood prevention measures.

“People living in flood-prone areas must be equally concerned. Taking proactive steps to prevent disaster should be a collective effort. We cannot continue to wait until floods destroy lives before taking action,” he added.

The sensitisation programme saw active participation from community leaders, transport unions, environmental officers, and local residents. Many attendees welcomed the initiative, pledging to adhere to the advice given and educate others on the dangers of careless driving and poor waste disposal.

Authorities in Ashaiman have assured that they will intensify public education and enforcement measures to ensure that residents comply with best practices to minimize accidents and flooding in the municipality.
