Alhaji Somaila Boakye, Ashanti Regional Chairman of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union
Correspondence from Ashanti Region
The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) of TUC, Alhaji Somaila Boakye, has instructed all commercial drivers in the Ashanti Region and beyond to strictly comply with the newly announced 15 percent reduction in transport fares, effective Saturday, May 24, 2025.
The directive follows national instructions from transport authorities and key stakeholders mandating fare reductions across the country.
Addressing the media alongside his regional executives and branch members, Chairman Boakye emphasised that although the prices of some goods and vehicle spare parts have not yet decreased, the union is honoring its commitment to national leadership by implementing the fare cut.
He assured the public that the GPRTU task force would actively monitor compliance and warned that any driver who fails to adhere to the new fares would be held accountable.
“We are urging our drivers to comply with the new 15 percent fare reduction starting tomorrow, Saturday. Though we are aware that the prices of spare parts and other items drivers purchase have not gone down, we are taking the lead in reducing fares so that we are not unfairly blamed,” he said.
“Our task force has been deployed to ensure that all drivers follow this directive.”
Chairman Boakye also appealed to the government and relevant authorities to ensure that all other commercial transport operators, including trotro drivers and non-GPRTU members, comply with the fare reduction as well.
“We have given this directive to our union members, and we expect the government to ensure that other operators also comply. We cannot compel trotro and other non-GPRTU drivers to follow the new fares, it is the government’s responsibility to ensure full enforcement,” he stated.
The chairman’s directive is part of ongoing efforts to promote fairness and consistency in public transportation fares in response to recent economic adjustments.
