Ashanti Regional Police Commander removed over chaotic Council of State election

The Ashanti Regional Police Commander, DCOP Frank Abrokwa, has been removed from his position following the violent disruption of the Council of State election in Kumasi on Tuesday, February 11, 2025.

Sources within the Police Service indicate that his removal takes immediate effect, though it remains unclear where he will be reassigned.

The election descended into chaos when a group of unidentified individuals stormed the polling center, disrupting the sorting and counting of ballots. Witnesses reported that the attackers overturned tables, destroyed ballot boxes, and scattered voting materials, forcing Electoral Commission (EC) officials to halt proceedings.

The unrest erupted after Yaw Owusu Obimpeh, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate and a frontrunner in the election, suffered an unexpected defeat. Disgruntled supporters allegedly instigated the violence, demanding a review of the results.

Despite a significant police presence at the venue, officers struggled to control the situation as tensions escalated, leading to a temporary suspension of the electoral process.

The Electoral Commission has yet to issue an official statement addressing the disruption or announcing the next steps regarding the election outcome.
