Ashiaman MP begins construction of dialysis centre

Ashiaman MP begins construction of dialysis centre

Ernest Henry Norgbey, the Member of Parliament for Ashaiman, has commenced the construction of an emergency dialysis centre for the Ashaiman Municipal Hospital.

The project is currently at the foundation level, with block work done and iron rods in place awaiting concrete works.

Mr. Norgbey, who visited the site, indicated that last year, during the commissioning of the hospital to municipal hospital status, the management appealed for a dialysis centre, which he took up.

He added that the project would be done in phases, stating that he would personally equip the centre to serve the needs of the residents in his constituency.

“A dialysis centre in the community for the people will go a long way to help and alleviate pressure on patients to travel very far to get care,” he said.

Dr. Mavis Oppong-Addoh, the Medical Superintendent of Ashaiman Municipal Hospital, expressed joy at the commencement of the project, noting that they were happy when the MP gave them his word to help construct the emergency dialysis centre.

Dr. Oppong-Addoh noted that they made the request because they realised that when patients visit the hospital and need acute care for dialysis, the person must be moved to a higher centre, and sometimes the cost and movement involved prevent them from accessing care.

She explained that when care is not provided on time, it could lead to the patient developing chronic kidney disease, which all health practitioners are worried about.

She noted that without a dialysis centre, patients needing care must travel to the 37 Military Hospital or Korle Bu to get access, which might delay care.
