Some Assembly Members in the Ashanti Region are urging President John Dramani Mahama to establish a special-purpose fund to support their work, in addition to the proposed monthly allowances.
They argue that such a fund would not only benefit them but also serve their constituents by addressing urgent issues in their electoral areas.
While they appreciate the President’s plan to introduce monthly allowances, they believe the special-purpose fund would be a more effective tool for providing direct support to their communities.
President Mahama recently announced that the 2025 budget would include provisions for Assembly Members’ allowances. Delivering his State of the Nation Address (SONA) on February 27, 2025, he emphasized the need to recognize and support local government representatives, acknowledging their crucial role in grassroots governance.
This policy shift marks a significant step toward improving the welfare of Assembly Members, who have long advocated for financial assistance to fulfill their responsibilities effectively.
