Chinese and Ghanaian-led illegal gold miners have encroached upon a 261-acre tract within the Breman-Adomanya forest in the Wassa Amenfi West District of the Western Region, leading to the destruction of timber, cocoa, and rubber plantations, as well as the contamination of the nearby River Tano. Despite local police awareness of these illicit operations, the miners continue unabated and on Sunday, February 23, attacked Citi News’ Western Regional Correspondent, Akwasi Agyei Annim while he was documenting the environmental damage. The assailants damaged his equipment in the presence of a police escort. The incident escalated when a security guard alerted the…
Ghana’s energy sector has long been heavily dependent on imported fossil fuels, a reliance that exposes the nation to the vagaries of global oil markets. More than 80% of Ghana’s transportation fuel is derived from imported petroleum products, a statistic that reflects a significant vulnerability in the country’s energy security framework (Ghana Energy Commission, 2023). In 2022, for instance, Ghana’s expenditure on fuel imports reached approximately $2.7 billion, accounting for nearly 25% of its total import expenditure, thereby underscoring not only the magnitude of the financial burden but also the inherent risks associated with fluctuating international oil prices (Bank of…

Ideally, in Ghana, one must always obey their masters, especially in politics. But at what cost? This reflection is crucial as we navigate the future of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia. The only thing worse than the painful defeat of the 2024 elections would be the party’s decision to abandon Dr Bawumia in favour of a new candidate in 2028. That would not only fracture the party’s base but also risk losing the economic credibility he has built over the years. Before joining politics, Dr Bawumia was a remarkable economist. His work in…
Joseph Agbeko Kpogo, an aspiring Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Anloga, has announced plans to construct a permanent party office for the constituency, a move he believes will enhance the efficiency of party operations and provide a suitable space for executives and members. Speaking to party members and supporters, Kpogo highlighted the urgent need for a dedicated office. He emphasised that the current arrangement—where the party operates from a rented apartment—is neither sustainable nor reflective of the party’s long-term vision for the area. “Our party deserves a permanent and well-equipped office space where executives and members can work efficiently, free…
When Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the shockwaves did not stop at Europe’s borders. Thousands of miles away, in the heart of Africa, economies trembled. Ghana, like many nations across the continent, found itself ensnared in the aftershocks of a war it did not start but could not escape. One of the most devastating consequences was the collapse of trade between Ukraine and Ghana. Once a flourishing partnership valued at $300.06 million in 2021, it plummeted to a mere $34 million by 2023. The war, waged with tanks and missiles, became a war of starvation and economic siege.…
