The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has increased electricity tariffs for the third quarter of 2025 by 2.45%. This move comes as a surprise to many, including PURC itself, since all traditional indicators pointed to a reduction. In April 2025, the Commission had already implemented a 14.75% increase for the first and second quarters. Given recent economic gains, a reduction seemed more likely. Electricity tariffs in Ghana are reviewed quarterly, using four primary indicators: the Cedi–US Dollar exchange rate, the inflation rate, natural gas prices, and the country’s electricity generation mix. These parameters form the basis of Ghana’s Energy Sector…

Mr. Johnson “The Mosquito” Asiedu-Nketia, the National Chairman of the Mahama-led 2.0 government of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has absolutely no leadership integrity and moral credibility to pride himself about. So, it is rather comical for the wiry-framed former Sunyani-East Member of Parliament to be haughtily and smugly calling for the removal or the immediate dismissal of Ghana’s professionally finest Electoral Commission Chairperson over the past three decades, by most global accounts, namely, Mrs. Jean Adukwei Mensa, and her two unprecedentedly competent deputies, namely, Dr. Bossman Asare and Mr. Samuel Tettey (See “EC Is a Subject of Reset in…

There is a quiet crisis eating away at the soul of Ghanaian society. It is not economic, nor infrastructural—it is existential. We are witnessing a disturbing obsession with titles: Dr., Prof., Engineer, Lawyer, and Architect—anything that offers a façade of prestige. In a culture where respect has become a currency tightly bound to labels, we have turned titles into idols. The result? A nation increasingly blind to substance, and drunk on symbols. Today, one cannot walk through public life in Ghana without tripping over an avalanche of self-declared titles. “Dr. So-and-so,” “Prof. This-or-that,” even “Engineer” or “Lawyer” prefixed like divine…
