While it cannot be gainsaid that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Presidential Candidate and Nominee for the pioneering electoral season of 1992, the late Prof. Albert A. Adu-Boahen, was a firebrand and a formidable political activist, I never for a split second envisaged Ghana’s most globally renowned historian of his generation to have a fighting chance against an autocratic and a charismatic junta leader and a presidential incumbent and a politically tenacious and more experienced and a strategically savvier Chairman Jeremiah “Jerry” John Rawlings. Not by any measure or stretch of the imagination. And neither did the now-former President John…
Let’s be clear, Israel’s so-called “pre-emptive strike” on Iran is a naked aggression and a violation of Article 2(4) of the United Nations charter. It is also a departure from the principle of self-defence as enshrined in Article 51 of the said charter. However, to understand Netanyahu’s political calculations, we must peel away the dense layers of domestic and international politics at play, along with the geopolitical risks and interests of key players in the region and beyond. This isn’t a religious war, but that of two adversaries with distinct religious persuasions. To start with, since the October 7 attack…

In an era of precarious global alignments and rising regional instability, the Strait of Hormuz—a slender maritime corridor linking the Persian Gulf to the Arabian Sea—has once again reemerged as a flashpoint for energy geopolitics. Following Iran’s recent threat to close the strait if the United States escalates its support for Israel in an ongoing regional war, concerns over the security of global energy supplies and economic stability have reached a critical juncture. While energy analysts caution that a complete blockade remains unlikely, the specter of disruption alone has triggered waves of apprehension across diplomatic and commercial circles.Located between Iran…
