Pre-emptive attacks in international law are rarely justified. The threat must evince itself through an obvious intent to inflict injury, evidence preparations that show the threat to be what Michael Walzer calls a “supreme emergency”, and arise in a situation where risk of defeat would be dramatically increased if force is not used.Reaching an assessment on that matter is almost impossible. Evidence of such a threat by the aggressor state is bound to be speculative, concealing other strategic objectives that make that action amount to illegal, preventive war. Israel’s ongoing attacks on Iran’s nuclear infrastructure are taking place in the…

Kufuor and Akufo-Addo are seen in the middle as Atta Mills is spotted in the background The obvious faces of former presidents of Ghana in this old photo are those who actually posed for the camera, but this story will begin with the focus on the not so obvious personality’s face. The old photo, which is sourced from graphic.com.gh, shows John Agyekum Kufuor (the second democratically-elected president of…

With the historically unprecedented suspension of substantive Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey-Torkornoo by President John Dramani Mahama, on thus far forensically unproven charges of gross professional misconduct and the flagrant misappropriation of public funds, among several other charges that, presumably, have yet to be officially and definitively established and disclosed to the general Ghanaian public, it comes as absolutely nothing short of seriously disconcerting and morally capricious for the President to cavalierly, albeit characteristically, reference Article 144(2) of Ghana’s 1992 Constitution as a strategically convenient pretext for nominating and calling on Parliament to begin vetting some 7 current judges…
