There is tension brewing in the Awutu Senya East Constituency among members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) over appointment allocations.
Amid the tension, party members had warned that the NDC risks the parliamentary seat for only one term if matters were not addressed.
Member of Parliament (MP) for the Constituency, Mrs. Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor, has been accused of sidelining constituency executives in decision-making, employing divide-and-rule tactics, disregarding party structures, and misallocating appointment slots.
A major grievance was the alleged diversion of appointment slots intended for deserving constituency executives to the MP’s favourites.
At a press conference, the Constituency Organizer, Mr. Daniel Takyi Mensah, said those affected included the Constituency Organizer, Deputy Communications Officer, Women’s Organizer, among others.
Clad in red and black attires, party members thronged the protest grounds to express their discontent over what they described as mistreatment by the MP.
Mr Mensah alleged that the MP blocked appointment opportunities for individuals, believed not to be in her good books.
According to him, the MP’s husband, Mr. Yussif, assumed the roles and responsibilities of the elected executives after the elections, undermining the authority of constituency leaders.
Amid the controversy, the Communications Officer, Mr. Kobby Wilson, who had been vocal in criticising the MP, was on Monday, May 12, reportedly denied access to the studios of Pink FM,
a local radio station in Kasoa, by individuals alleged to be thugs sent by the MP to prevent further disclosure of the issues.
“Slots are coming in, but she hasn’t opened up for anyone to know. After working so hard as constituency organiser, canvassing votes for the party I have been sidelined and, our grassroots, which are the branches are murmuring.
“The base of the party is getting irritated based on these things that are happening, and anybody who decides to point it out to the MP becomes an enemy.”
He called on the party’s top hierarchy to intervene in the situation to resolve the issues for peace to prevail in the constituency.
Mr Wilson added that the constituency executives attempted to resolve the issue through regional and national channels, but all efforts proved futile.
He appealed to the Chief of Staff, Mr. Julius Debrah, the party’s top leadership, and President John Dramani Mahama to intervene to prevent further escalation.
