The Ayawaso East Municipal Assembly, in collaboration with Broadway Entertainment, organized a cleanup exercise in Nima in the Greater Accra Region on June 28, 2025, ahead of the much-anticipated launch of a National Prayer and Thanksgiving Day, which will be graced by President John Dramani Mahama at the National Mosque.

Leading the exercise was the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Abdul Ganiyu Ibrahim, who, along with assembly staff, community leaders, and residents, took to the streets to clean gutters, sweep roadsides, and raise awareness about sanitation in the municipality.

Speaking to the media, Ibrahim highlighted the significance of the initiative, stating that the cleanup was both a gesture of respect ahead of the President’s visit and a broader call to action on improving sanitation in the area.

“Sanitation is a big issue in our community. We are here with our partners from Broadway Entertainment to make sure the environment is clean before we welcome H.E. John Dramani Mahama to the National Mosque on Tuesday. Cleanliness is the foundation for every good thing we want to do for our people.”

The MCE also hinted at broader government efforts to address sanitation nationwide, revealing that the upcoming event may include the launch of a National Sanitation Day, which could be replicated at the municipal level.

“We are hoping that once the President inaugurates the National Sanitation Day Committee, we can begin our own Ayawaso East Municipal Sanitation Day,” he added.

Ibrahim made a passionate appeal for logistical support to enhance the Assembly’s sanitation efforts and called on all community stakeholders to join in the ongoing initiatives.

“Sanitation is not just for the Assembly or a few stakeholders — it’s a shared responsibility. We want everyone to get involved: chiefs, opinion leaders, business owners, and residents. When our community is clean, we all benefit.”

Adding his voice to the campaign was Abdul Fatawu Alhassan, a sanitation advocate popularly known as “Cash” and referred to by many as the Mayor of Nima.

He lauded the joint effort and reiterated the commitment of community members to long-term environmental cleanliness.

“Sanitation is something we take seriously,” said Cash. “We are here to collaborate with the municipal authorities and reclaim our community through cleanliness. This is just the beginning — there will be more cleanup exercises ahead.”

The National Prayer and Thanksgiving Day is scheduled for Tuesday, July 1, 2025, with a special prayer session and gathering at the National Mosque, where President Mahama is expected to address attendees.
