Azamati eases to season’s best finish at Desert Heat Classics

Benjamin Azamati, Ghana’s 100m record holder, improved his season’s best time with a 10.02s finish at the Desert Heat Classics in Tucson, Arizona.

Azamati, who stormed to victory from lane 5, took first place ahead of Trayvion White-Austin, who finished second, while 10.24s was enough for a third place finish for Tyson Tippett.

Jason Boston came fourth while Ian Dossman, Rodrick Pleasant and Enrick Brown, came fifth, sixth and seventh respectively.

Azamati’s impressive time comes after April’s sizzling 10.07s at the Mt. Sac Relays in California.

The Ghanaian, who finished in the semi-finals of last summer’s Olympic Games, has been in fine form this season, warming himself up for the major events.

The 26-year-old, who had been hampered by injury in the last two years, revealed to 3Sports in December that his goal was to participate at the World Championship.

Although Azamati has shown positive signs and strong running, he is yet to run under the 10sec barrier in more than 24 months.

He managed to book a spot to the Paris Olympic Games, where a sub 10s was a Mandatory requirement, after finishing as part of the best ranked 40 athletes in the world.

Under the guidance of coach Bolton, who Azamati joined after the Olympic Games, the Ghanaian will be hoping the opportunity of racing alongside some of the finest athletes, including 2024 Paris 100m bronze medalist Fred Kerley, will elevate his game further.
