Ghana left-back Baba Rahman has dispelled rumors of his retirement from international football, despite his prolonged absence from the Black Stars squad.
The PAOK defender has not played for Ghana since September 2023, when he faced criticism from supporters at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi during the final 2026 World Cup qualifier against the Central African Republic.
Following that incident, Rahman took a break from the national team, citing both mental and physical reasons.
In an interview with Joy Sports, the former Chelsea star opened up about his decision and reaffirmed his commitment to a comeback.
“The jeering didn’t faze me during the match — as a pro, you learn to handle that. But after the final whistle, as I walked to the team bus, it really hit home,” he said.
“We had just won, so naturally I expected some enthusiasm or backing, but instead, I was still being jeered. That part was hard to swallow.
” “I’ll be back soon, God willing. I’ve stayed in regular touch with the coach. It’s just been unfortunate timing — every international break, something seems to come up with my fitness. But I’m working hard, and I’ll be ready.”
Black Stars head coach Otto Addo has previously expressed his desire for Rahman’s return, highlighting the defender’s expertise and quality as assets to the national side.
The former Chelsea defender was part of Ghana’s squad at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, where the team narrowly missed out on a place in the knockout stages.
The PAOK defender has not played for Ghana since November 2023, when he faced criticism from fans at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi during what was indeed the last AFCON qualifier match.
