The District Chief Executive for Bawku West, Hon. James Ayamwego, has launched a decisive campaign against illegal mining operations in the district, issuing a one-week ultimatum to operators to reclaim degraded lands or face legal consequences.
In his first public working visit since assuming office, Hon. Ayamwego led a high-powered delegation from the District Security Council (DISEC) to several illegal mining sites, beginning with the Teshie community—a hotspot for unauthorized mining activity.
During his visit to Teshie, the DCE expressed alarm over the reckless encroachment of mining activities dangerously close to critical public infrastructure, including the Teshie Chief’s Palace, the local health centre, the Assembly of God Church, and the main market square. Several homes, footpaths, and public toilets have also been affected by mining pits and runoff.
He described the situation as unacceptable, particularly the flooding caused by blocked waterways due to abandoned mining pits, which he warned could trigger a public health crisis. “It is so sad to see houses and public toilets being affected like this,” he lamented.
The DCE has directed all illegal miners in the area to reclaim the land within a week or risk arrest and prosecution. He also called on the chief of Teshie to collaborate with the district assembly and mobilize local youth to assist in restoring the damaged environment.
Meanwhile, the Chief of Sapeliga, Naba Alasbuudi Emmanuel Abangiba Ayagiba II, has issued a strong warning to illegal miners operating in his jurisdiction. He urged all individuals interested in mining to register with the Minerals Commission and comply with environmental regulations. Naba Ayagiba further warned that anyone found mining near water bodies or residential areas would be arrested and prosecuted.
Hon. Ayamwego’s tour also took him to several other communities including Abulanga, Bulinga, Kopela, Sapeliga, Widnaba, and Tilli, where he engaged with local leaders and inspected the extent of environmental degradation caused by galamsey operations.
The DCE reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to protecting the environment and safeguarding the health and safety of the people of Bawku West.
