Bawumia contributed more resources to NPP’s 2024 campaign than anyone else — Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu

Former Majority Leader in Parliament and MP for Suame, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, has revealed that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia contributed the most resources to the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 2024 campaign.

According to him, while others supported the party’s efforts, Dr. Bawumia, who was the flagbearer, contributed enormously.

He made the statement during an interview with 1957 News on Monday, June 23, amid ongoing discussions about who is best placed to lead the NPP in the next elections.

“Bawumia contributed more resources to the NPP’s 2024 campaign than anyone else. His contribution was enormous. That is not to say others didn’t help—some did—but he did much more. If you listen to him, he acknowledges the potential of other people,” Mr. Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu said.

The veteran lawmaker dismissed suggestions that financial strength alone should determine who leads the party, as some subtle debates have emerged between Dr. Bawumia and fellow flagbearer hopeful Kennedy Agyapong on who has more money to support the NPP.

According to him, no individual can single-handedly fund the party’s activities, and leadership must go beyond claims of wealth.

“You see, if you look at our party’s constitution, the qualifications for a presidential candidate are that you must have been in the party for at least four years and be in good standing. These are the two major requirements. But beyond that, governance is not about someone claiming they have money to do this or that,” he argued.

He also described Dr. Bawumia as the most capable person to raise the NPP to a more admirable level, citing his confidence, character, and ingenuity.

This comes after the opposition party, following its National Executive Council meeting on Tuesday, June 17, slated January 31, 2026, for its flagbearer elections.
