Investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni has weighed in on the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer race, asserting that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia remains the party’s most compelling contender for the 2028 general elections.
Taking to Facebook on Friday, June 20, 2025, Mr. Azure shared his thoughts amid growing debate within the NPP ranks, following the official announcement of the party’s upcoming presidential primaries.
“The NPP’s best bet, the party’s most formidable candidate in the next election, is Dr Mahamudu Bawumia,” he wrote in a succinct but powerful post that has since sparked wide engagement on social media.
Dr. Bawumia’s potential candidacy has continued to generate enthusiasm and speculation, particularly among party members who see him as a figure capable of bridging internal divides and energising the party base.
His political standing has become a central point of discussion as the NPP prepares to regroup following its 2024 electoral loss. The announcement that presidential primaries will be held on January 31, 2026 — a date set by the party’s National Council — has officially kicked off what is expected to be a hotly contested race for leadership.
Manasseh Azure’s endorsement, though not from within the party, adds a new dimension to the public discourse, reinforcing Dr. Bawumia’s image as the candidate to watch in the NPP’s search for a comeback strategy.
