Investigative journalist and author, Manasseh Azure Awuni, has described former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) most formidable candidate for the next general election.
In a social media post on Friday, June 20, Manasseh said Dr. Bawumia remains the best person to lead the party into the 2028 polls.
“Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is the NPP’s best bet, the party’s most formidable candidate in the next election,” he wrote.
His comment comes as the NPP prepares to hold its flagbearer elections on January 31, 2026, following a National Executive Council meeting held on Tuesday, June 17.
Dr. Bawumia, who led the party into the 2024 elections—which ended in its worst electoral defeat—is yet to officially declare his intention to contest again.
However, speaking after receiving a number of NPP Members of Parliament at his office on Thursday, he acknowledged their support, suggesting it would play a significant role in shaping his next political step.
The visit comes amid growing tension between the Bawumia and Kennedy Agyapong camps, with both sides claiming to command majority support from the party’s 88-member parliamentary caucus.
Kennedy Agyapong, the former Assin Central MP, has already declared his intention to run.
Other expected contenders in the race include former Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, Abetifi MP Bryan Acheampong, and former NPP General Secretary Kwabena Agyei Agyepong.
