Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has made a passionate appeal to the leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), calling for the enforcement of strict internal discipline as the party embarks on a critical phase of reforms.
Addressing delegates at the NPP’s National Delegates Conference held at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium on Saturday, July 19, 2025, Dr. Bawumia underscored the urgency of restoring order, unity, and public trust within the party’s ranks as it seeks a political comeback.
“To the leadership of the party, I ask that you be firm and crack the whip so that discipline is maintained within our ranks,” he said. “There should be discipline, humility, lessons learnt, and the pursuit of a common good for Ghana that we can become the refreshed party we desire.”
His remarks come at a pivotal moment, as the party grapples with internal discontent and seeks to overhaul its structure in the wake of its 2024 electoral defeat. With dozens of constitutional amendments under consideration, including major changes to the party’s electoral processes, Dr. Bawumia urged delegates to put Ghana’s interest above all else.
“In all our decisions and our actions towards the reform process, let us be guided by the rule of what is in the best interest of Ghana,” he said.
Dr. Bawumia’s call for unity and principled leadership was seen by many as a direct challenge to factionalism and complacency that have plagued the party in recent years. His message, urging humility and accountability, resonated with party loyalists who believe the NPP must undergo a serious transformation to remain competitive ahead of the 2028 elections.
The conference, themed “Rebuilding Together with Our Values,” continues to serve as a platform for key party figures to reflect on past missteps and chart a new path forward for the NPP.
