Bawumia’s so-called rich ideas took dollar rate from GH¢4 to GH¢17 — Edudzi Tamekloe

The Director of Legal Affairs of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Godwin Edudzi Tamekloe, has ridiculed former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s recent claims about his leadership potential and innovation credentials, describing them as hollow in light of Ghana’s economic troubles.

Dr. Bawumia, in an engagement with over 200 former Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs), declared that although he may not have wealth, he is equipped with “rich ideas” capable of transforming Ghana’s future. The meeting, held in Accra, forms part of his early efforts to rally support ahead of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer contest for the 2028 general elections.

But Tamekloe was quick to take a swipe at the comment, dismissing Bawumia’s self-praise as disconnected from the realities Ghanaians endured during his tenure.

“His so-called rich ideas took the exchange rate to GHS17 to the dollar,” Tamekloe fired back in a Facebook post, referencing the dramatic decline of the Ghanaian cedi under Bawumia’s leadership as head of the Economic Management Team.

Tamekloe also advised the former Vice President to temper his political ambitions, especially given the NPP’s crushing defeat in the 2024 elections under his leadership.

“Calm down. You lost an election barely six months ago,” he wrote.

The NDC legal chief’s reaction underscores the intensifying political temperature as key figures in the NPP position themselves for a post-Akufo-Addo era. For Tamekloe, however, Bawumia’s renewed bid for power is out of touch with the lingering economic scars many Ghanaians still associate with his time in office.
