Black Stars’ new Technical advisor, Winfried Schäfer, has emphasized the importance of building a cohesive team rather than relying on individual talent.
The German tactician, who led Cameroon to AFCON glory in 2002, will work closely with head coach Otto Addo to strengthen the Black Stars ahead of their World Cup qualifiers against Chad and Madagascar.
Speaking on his approach, Schäfer stressed the value of teamwork:
“It’s not the best players who win matches, but the best teams that play together. No one should come in thinking, ‘I’m from Real Madrid’ or ‘I play for Arsenal.’ Everyone must take pride in wearing the Ghana jersey.”
Schäfer brings over 40 years of managerial experience, having coached national teams like Cameroon, Thailand, and Jamaica, as well as European clubs such as Borussia Mönchengladbach, Karlsruher SC, VfB Stuttgart, and Borussia Berlin.
In addition to his advisory role, Schäfer will serve as Ghana’s Director of Football, overseeing long-term strategic development in collaboration with the GFA’s Technical Directorate. His responsibilities will include guiding youth development, ensuring high team performance, and aligning Ghanaian football with a clear philosophy.
Ghana will face Chad at the Accra Sports Stadium on Friday, March 21, at 19:00 GMT before traveling to Morocco to take on Madagascar at the Grand Stade d’Al Hoceima on Monday, March 24. The Black Stars currently sit second in Group I with nine points from four games.
