The Chancellor of the newly chartered University of Gold Coast (UGC), Bishop Dr. Gideon Titi-Ofei, delivered a compelling speech at the media launch and inauguration of the university’s Council and Board of Trustees, calling for a new era of ethical and visionary leadership in Ghana.
Addressing the theme “The Foundation of a Great Nation,” he made a bold statement that has sparked national conversations:
“Ghana does not have a resource problem. Ghana has a leadership problem.”
His remarks have drawn widespread attention from policymakers, educators, and the media as he outlined the university’s mission to produce transformational leaders.
He stressed the urgent need to redefine leadership in Ghana, stating, “We cannot build a great nation if leadership is treated as a privilege instead of a responsibility. We cannot build a great nation if education is seen as a formality rather than a foundation. We cannot build a great nation if governance is driven by short-term politics rather than long-term vision.”
The University of Gold Coast (UGC), formerly known as Accra Business School, has evolved into a fully chartered institution with an expanded academic focus on governance, law, security, and diplomacy.
Bishop Dr. Titi-Ofei emphasized that the university’s mission extends beyond awarding degrees, aiming to train ethical, competent, and action-driven leaders.
He declared, “The world does not honour potential; it honours results. We are not here to make promises—we are here to deliver.”
The inauguration of the university’s Council and Board of Trustees marks a significant milestone in its history, bringing together visionary leaders and industry experts to uphold academic and professional excellence.
Bishop Dr Titi-Ofei reaffirmed the institution’s role in shaping Ghana’s future, stating, “Ghana is standing at the crossroads of history. The world is asking: Where will the next generation of transformative leaders emerge? Our answer is clear: They will emerge from the University of Gold Coast.”
The keynote speaker, Prof. Kwame Boasiako Omane-Antwi, addressed the gathering on “Higher Education as a Catalyst for National Development: The Role of the University of Gold Coast.”
He emphasized the importance of human capital development, quality assurance, and strengthening institutional structures.
According to him, “Higher education institutions have a critical role to play in driving economic growth and social transformation in Ghana. They must prioritize building human capital, ensuring excellent academic standards, and contributing to national and international development.”
He highlighted Ghana’s economic challenges, including a debt crisis, macroeconomic instability, and low growth, stressing that universities must equip individuals with the skills, knowledge, and mindset necessary to drive societal change.
Prof. Elvis Cornerstone, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Gold Coast, reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to academic excellence, innovation, and transformation.
“We are not just an institution of higher learning but a catalyst for economic empowerment and social change,” he stated.
