The Bono Regional Security Council (REGSEC) has intensified security measures on key highways in the region following a recent surge in armed robbery incidents.
Police posts have been established at strategic locations and known robbery hotspots, with regular patrols being carried out to deter criminal activity and restore public confidence.
This heightened response comes in the wake of a fatal armed robbery attack on Friday, June 13, 2025, at Atronie, a suburb of Sunyani along the Sunyani–Goaso highway. The attack resulted in the tragic death of a driver, who was shot in front of passengers after allegedly refusing to comply with the robbers’ demands. The incident has sparked widespread concern among commuters, residents, and farmers over growing insecurity in the area.
On Tuesday, June 24, 2025, the Bono Regional Minister, Mr. Joseph Addae Akwaboa Esq., led members of REGSEC on a tour of identified robbery-prone areas along the region’s highways. The visit aimed to assess the effectiveness of the security interventions and to reassure residents that their safety remains a top priority.
During a community meeting at Atronie with the chief and some residents, Mr. Akwaboa stated that seven new police posts had already been established between Atuahenekrom and Atronie. He noted that police visibility and patrol operations have been significantly increased to maintain a strong security presence.
The Minister added that advanced plans are underway to install surveillance cameras at strategic points along the highways to enhance monitoring and assist law enforcement in preventing and responding to incidents of robbery.
He also cited poor mobile network coverage as a major hindrance to timely reporting of robbery incidents. To address this, he revealed that the government is engaging mobile network providers to expand their coverage to areas identified as robbery hotspots.
In addition, the Minister announced that signage featuring police contact information will soon be erected along the highways to make it easier for the public to reach law enforcement in case of an emergency.
Touching on the poor state of the roads, Mr. Akwaboa assured residents that the government has included the Sunyani–Goaso stretch in its road development plans, with construction expected to begin next year.
Nana Kwabena Gyan, the Nifahene of Atronie, expressed gratitude to the Minister for his proactive measures. He urged the government to expedite the reconstruction of the roads, noting that improved infrastructure would not only support the fight against armed robbery but also boost the local economy.
