Can Democracy Survive the Cult of Shareholder Value In The AI Era?

Can Democracy Survive the Cult of Shareholder Value In The AI Era?

Leviathans, by definition, cannot be run like business ventures, or so the contrarian wisdom goes. Yet, in the United States, a constitutional democracy that has bedrocked American prosperity and made it the most powerful force for good in human history, there are those who envision a different future. A future where the interests of oligarchic billionaire entrepreneurs and tax-avoiding corporations take precedence over the well-being of society and the planet. A future that is, in essence, an absolute monarchy in disguise.

As we stand at the precipice of the AI era, it’s imperative to recognise the dangers of prioritising shareholder value above all else. The consequences of such a path are far-reaching and potentially catastrophic. The ruthless exploitation of workforces, the pillaging of natural resources, and the degradation of the environment are all symptoms of a system that values profits over people and the planet.

A stark example of this phenomenon is the recent mind-blowing arms deals secured by MAGA King Trump – who apparently hates wars such as the one in Ukraine because it kills young people – during his well-publicised trip to the Middle East, worth trillions of dollars. These mega arms deals won’t benefit the average worker but will instead line the pockets of tax-avoiding billionaires who don’t believe in sharing profits with workers. The billions of petrol dollars in fat commissions and obscene profits will further enrich the already wealthy, while the working class is left with scraps.

The question is, in the AI era, can democracy survive the cult of shareholder value? Or will we succumb to the whims of corporate interests, sacrificing the very foundations of our democracy in the process? The stakes are high, and the consequences of inaction are dire. It’s time for us to rethink our priorities and ensure that our economic systems serve the greater good, not just the interests of the few!
