
The Central Regional Secretariat of NADMO has issued an urgent appeal for humanitarian assistance, highlighting the dire situation of displaced residents, destroyed homes and disrupted livelihoods following severe flooding that hit the region.
Relief items needed include food, potable water, emergency shelter, medical supplies, clothing, bedding materials trauma, counselling and financial support for affected families.
The Central Region is grappling with the devastating impact of floods and fires that have affected a total of four thousand six hundred and thirty-six individuals across eleven districts, metropolitans and municipalities.
The MMDAs included Awutu Senya East, Gomoa East, Awutu Senya West, Effutu, Komenda Edina Eguafo Abrem,m (KEEA), Twifo Atti Morkwaa, Hemang Lower Denkyira, Agona West, Asikuma Odoben Brakwa, Agona East and Cape Coast Metropolitan Assembly.
In Cape Coast, a tragic incident occurred on the morning of June 1, at about 0700 hours when an old brick storey building near the iconic London Bridge collapsed due to the torrential rains, where individuals were trapped under the debris.
As a result of the floods in Cape Coast Metropolis, areas such as London Bridge, Zion, Gyegyaano, OLA Madina, Aquarium, Siwdu Estate, Antem, Ntsin, Amamoma, Ekon, Brofoyedur, Kitsiwdo, Mempeasem, Nkanfoa, 3rd Ridge, Ayensu Kwaprow, Adisadel Church of Christ School, Pedu and North Ola experienced a widespread destruction
In the KEEA Municipality, residents of Teterim, Gwira Akyinim, Pershie, Peace Avenue, Ataabadze, Mmofra Akyinim, Estate, Bronyibima, CP, Zongo, Essaman, Neizers Garden, Motel Junction, Akotobinsin and Agona are also counting losses.
A statement released by the central region NADMO said, an emergency response teams from NADMO, Ghana National Fire Service, Ambulance Service, the Metropolitan Assembly, NIB, RCC and the Ghana Police Service quickly mobilized rescue operations.
With swift intervention led by the Regional Minister Hon Ekow Okyere Panyin Eduamoah, the Regional NADMO Director and the Cape Coast MCE Hon George Justice Arthur earth-moving equipment were deployed to aid in the effort.
Two victims Fredrick Kwesi Yeboah aged 21 and Obaapanyin Ataa Kakra aged 79 were rescued alive and are currently stable at the hospital whilst two others, Obaapanyin Ataa Panyin aged 79 and Opanyin Emmanuel Ankaful aged 84 were declared dead upon arrival at the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital.
In response to the ongoing threat posed by weakened infrastructure the Cape Coast Metropolitan Assembly through its Disaster Management Committee and in collaboration with NADMO commenced a citywide demolition exercise targeted structures including all dilapidated buildings billboards and other hazardous installations identified as risks by disaster management team.
Donations are being coordinated through the NADMO Central Regional Office in Cape Coast and at various municipal and district offices across the region including Kasoa, Gomoa Potsin, Beraku, Winneba, Agona Swedru, Agona Nsaba, Breman Asikuma, Twifo Praso, Twifo Hemang Cape Coast and Elmina.
Authorities urge institutions organizations and individuals to extend their support emphasizing that collective action is essential to bring hope recovery and stability to affected communities during this challenging period.
